President of UNESCO Executive Board Urges Urgent Global Action to Address Escalating Crises
Paris, April 14 (QNA) - HE President of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Dr. Nasser bin Hamad Al Hanzab called on the international community to renew multilateral cooperation, strengthen institutional effectiveness, and take urgent action to confront growing global challenges.
Speaking at the opening of the 224th Executive Board session at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, His Excellency said the current moment is one of uncertainty and rapid transformation, marked by escalating conflicts, climate pressures, widening inequality, and accelerated technological change, requiring a more responsive and effective UNESCO.
HE Al Hanzab expressed deep concern over the humanitarian toll of ongoing crises, particularly on civilians and children, stressing the need to protect the right to education in times of conflict.
Citing the Global Education Monitoring Report, he noted that 273 million children and youth remain out of school worldwide, calling it a clear signal for urgent action.
He emphasized that while education is among the sectors most affected by crises, it remains essential for survival and a fundamental human right.
He also condemned attacks on schools and universities, urging that educational institutions remain safe spaces for peace and opportunity.
HE Al Hanzab called for strengthening UNESCO's financial, technical, and programmatic capacities, underscoring that education, science, culture, communication, and information are core pillars of peace and sustainable development.
He highlighted the importance of improving the implementation and follow-up of Executive Board decisions to enhance the organization's credibility and performance.
He also welcomed the launch of an open-ended working group established by the 43rd General Conference of UNESCO to enhance the functioning of its governing bodies.
Co-chaired by the President of the Executive Board and the President of the General Conference, the group recently held its first meeting with broad participation from member states, focusing on improving efficiency, transparency, coherence, and trust within the organization's governance system.
The 224th Executive Board session is reviewing UNESCO's Programme and Budget (C/5).
HE Al Hanzab stated that the budget reflects shared priorities, guiding how the organization addresses global challenges, allocates resources, and delivers results, calling for a framework that is both ambitious and realistic, transparent, and impact-driven.
He also noted progress under the UNESCO80 reform initiative, emphasizing the need for tangible outcomes through better coordination, resource alignment, and support for field offices.
HE Al Hanzab praised the constructive cooperation within UNESCO's governing bodies, stressing the importance of maintaining this positive momentum and ensuring continued work based on trust and shared purpose.
The 224th Executive Board session will continue in the coming weeks to address program priorities, governance, reform efforts, and key global issues. (QNA)
