Spain Rejects US Request to Use Its Military Bases in Middle East Escalation
Madrid, March 25 (QNA) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed his country's rejection of the US' request to use its military bases in a potential Israeli-US-Iranian war, despite President Donald Trump's threat to sever US trade relations with Spain.
In a speech before his country's parliament, Sanchez warned that a war in the Middle East would entail a scenario he described as "far worse than the 2003 invasion of Iraq," saying, "The current scenario is worse, and its impact could be wider and deeper. This war is senseless and illegitimate, and it hinders the achievement of economic, social, and environmental goals."
He also predicted that the war would have a similar economic impact on millions of people, adding, "Every bomb that falls in the Middle East ultimately affects, as we are already seeing, the purchasing power of our families."
He noted that his government had approved a comprehensive aid package last week worth five billion euros (approximately $5.8 billion) aimed at mitigating the economic impact of the war, including reductions in fuel taxes, stressing that "it is not fair that some ignite wars in the world while others bear the consequences."
The Madrid government has been prominent in its anti-war stance since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East, warning of its repercussions on the global economy as a whole. (QNA)
