Bahrain Raises Concerns Over Iran Attacks on GCC in Second Identical Letter to UN Leadership
New York, March 23 (QNA) - The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), represented by Bahrain's permanent mission to the United Nations, has submitted two identical letters to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the Security Council, Mike Waltz, highlighting ongoing missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran.
The letters detail repeated strikes since late February targeting member states' airspace, territorial waters, and infrastructure. According to the statement, Gulf air defense systems have intercepted many of the attacks, helping to limit damage and protect civilian lives and key facilities.
The GCC said the strikes have affected critical energy infrastructure, including oil production and refining facilities, fuel storage sites, export ports, gas installations, and airports, as well as civilian and government buildings. It described the attacks as systematic and a serious threat to global energy supplies and regional stability.
The communication also accused Iran of violating international law and failing to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, particularly through actions that threaten maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and target commercial shipping.
The GCC reiterated its strong condemnation of the attacks, warning that their continuation poses a direct threat to regional and international peace. It called on the international community and the Security Council to take firm action to ensure compliance with UN resolutions.
The bloc also affirmed its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, stating it would take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and populations. (QNA)
