New York, March 10 (QNA) - The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the closure of crossings into the Gaza Strip continues to undermine humanitarian operations, noting that the continued closure of the Zikim crossing forces aid workers to redirect vital supplies destined for northern Gaza through the southern Kerem Abu Salem crossing, which is still the only crossing in operation. OCHA explained that this long route is slower and more expensive.

OCHA reported that two days ago, some humanitarian workers were allowed to alternate between entering and leaving Gaza for the first time since the escalation of violence began on Feb. 28 via the Kerem Abu Salem crossing.

Medical evacuations and the return of Palestinians from abroad remain suspended, due to the continued closure of the Rafah crossing.

Meanwhile, the UN and its partners continue to seize every opportunity to support those in need and expand their humanitarian operations wherever possible.

The UN Resident Coordinator in the Occupied Palestinian Territory Ramiz Alekperov condemned the killing and wounding of Palestinians in attacks by Israeli settlers. He warned that the violence is escalating and pointed to the grave dangers Palestinians face in the region. Alekperov called on Israeli authorities to prevent such attacks.

The continued closure of checkpoints throughout the West Bank undermines Palestinians’ access to services and workplaces, as well as the movement of emergency and humanitarian teams.

Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus confirmed that ambulances there take longer to reach patients because they have to use longer routes and look for more accessible gates. (QNA)
