Arab League Slams Israeli Abuses Against Palestinian Prisoners, Calls for Global Probe
Cairo, February 03 (QNA) - The Arab League stressed that it is monitoring with full rage and profound apprehension the Israeli persistent violations against Palestinian prisoners and detainees in the occupation's prisons.
It added that the latest incident of such acts was the killing of freed prisoner Khaled Al Saifi (67) from Dheisheh Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, West Bank, on Monday evening, just one week after his release from Ramla Prison Clinic in critical health condition.
A statement by the Arab League strongly condemned this dreadful crime, stressing that it is added to the long record of Israeli inhumane violations against Palestinian prisoners, including intentional medical neglect, using prisoners as guinea pigs, and procrastinating in providing essential treatments, leading to the outbreak of diseases and the death of dozens of inmates, whether inside cells or after being released while in critical conditions.
These methodical policies represent a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and intend to break the will of the Palestinian people and gnaw at their legitimate resistance against the occupation, the statement read, holding the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the killing of Khaled Al Saifi.
Releasing Khaled Al Saifi in a critical condition is an attempt to weasel out of the crime committed against him in a policy dubbed "slow execution", the statement continued, emphasizing that this crime is part of a wide campaign that includes all detainees.
The Arab League further indicated that during his four-month arbitrary administrative detention, Al Saifi was exposed to methodical torture and inhumane acts, and was badly beaten, in addition to intentionally depriving him of proper medical treatment due to his worsening health condition as he suffered from acute pulmonary fibrosis.
Reports indicate that the Israeli prison authorities administered two injections claimed to be for influenza prevention, which instead resulted in severe adverse respiratory events and a rapid deterioration of his health, pointing to intentional harm aimed at the slow execution of Palestinian prisoners, according to a joint statement issued by the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners' Society.
The statement called for dispatching an international investigation commission to the Israeli prisons to detect these violations and medical neglect, and to take the Israelis responsible for these crimes to task.
It also called for imposing pressure on Israel to provide proper treatment and immediately release prisoners who are in critical conditions to receive treatment abroad.
The statement declared the Arab League's full solidarity with the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle for freedom and independence, calling for the immediate cessation of all kinds of occupation and violations.
The statement further called for establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, stressing that the issue of the Palestinian prisoners is an Arab and human cause, and that the Arab League will remain committed to backing this cause for the full extent of justice.
