Kuala Lumpur, February 23 (QNA) - An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Sabah state on the island of Borneo in eastern Malaysia early Monday.

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was located less than 100 km (62 miles) northeast of the state capital, Kota Kinabalu, at a depth of 620 km.

No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said it would continue to monitor the situation closely, estimating the earthquake's magnitude at 6.8. It noted that tremors were felt by residents on the west coast of Sabah and in parts of Sarawak state. (QNA)
