Iraq Highlights Challenges in Meeting 2028 Mine-Free Deadline
Baghdad, February 22 (QNA) - The Iraqi Ministry of Environment has affirmed the country's continued commitment to its international obligations to remove mines and remnants of war, aiming to declare the nation mine-free by the end of 2028. However, officials warned that this trajectory faces funding challenges that require greater support.
Administrative Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Environment, Dr. Iktifa Al Hasnawi, stated that achieving this goal is contingent upon the provision of necessary financial allocations. She pointed out that the lack of sufficient funding constitutes an obstacle to accelerating clearance operations within the specified timetable.
Al Hasnawi explained that mine clearance efforts rely primarily on national capabilities alongside several investment projects implemented in coordination with authorized companies. She noted that the cessation of international support has cast a shadow over the national program.
She called on the next government to give the mine clearance file special priority by securing the necessary financial and logistical support. Furthermore, she urged an enhanced role for provinces in supporting clearance operations within their borders to ensure citizen safety and create an environment suitable for development. (QNA)
