Qatar TotalEnergies Open: Sakkari Delighted to Reach the Semis
Doha, February 12 (QNA) - Greek player Maria Sakkari expressed her great happiness after defeating Poland’s Iga Swiatek, ranked second in the world, in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 7-5) and advancing to the semifinals of the 2026 Qatar TotalEnergies Open for Women.
In a special statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Sakkari said that she was extremely pleased with the victory and with reaching the semifinals in Doha amid the wonderful atmosphere surrounding the tournament.
She added that the win over Swiatek was not easy, especially after losing the first set, but she managed to raise her level afterward and play an aggressive style that paid off in the second and third sets, ultimately securing the victory. She said she was proud of that achievement.
Regarding being the first player to defeat Swiatek in a WTA 1000 tournament after losing the opening set, Sakkari explained that small details made the difference during the match. She noted that such details are crucial when facing a player of Swiatek’s caliber, who relies on deep shots, and emphasized that it was necessary to combine aggressive play with mental toughness, which she was able to do. She added that both players delivered an excellent performance and expressed hope that everyone enjoyed the match.
Sakkari also said she looks forward to continuing her winning run at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open and hopes to deliver her best performance in tomorrow’s semifinal to secure a place in the final and continue her successful campaign in the tournament. (QNA)
