Munich, February 13 (QNA) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for a reset of transatlantic relations and a "revival of trust" between Europe and the United States, stressing that the international order no longer exists as it once did, in an era characterized by great power competition and increasing security risks.

In his opening address at the 62nd Munich Security Conference on Friday, Merz explained that Europe is required to further strengthen its defense capabilities while simultaneously adhering to the transatlantic alliance.

He emphasized that the United States "will not be strong enough to act alone" in an era of great power competition, and that NATO membership represents a competitive advantage for both Europe and the United States.

Merz noted that talks are underway with France regarding options for a joint European nuclear deterrent, without providing further details about the nature of these talks or their outcomes.

The German Chancellor also addressed the tensions that have characterized transatlantic relations over the past year, stating that the "culture war" associated with the American MAGA movement is not a European issue.

He emphasized that freedom of expression in Germany "stops at the limits of human dignity and the constitution," and that Europe "does not believe in tariffs and protectionism, but in free trade."

A statement from the Chancellor's office noted that Merz would hold bilateral meetings and multilateral forums during the three-day conference, focusing on European security, transatlantic relations, and Ukraine. (QNA)
