Paris, November 07 (QNA) - Fresh protests swept France Saturday against the rising cost of living and in support of young people, but turnout was substantially lower than during the previous three weeks, amid ubiquitous security measures, particularly in Paris.
Authorities are seeking to prevent a repeat of the scenes of rioting and looting that erupted in the aftermath of demonstrations on Oct. 17.
Outside Paris, around 7,000 people took part in 68 demonstrations Saturday, marking a significant downturn in participation.
The crisis in France began with a movement by high school students protesting conditions in the national education system, before demands over the rising cost of living were added to the mix.
Unions representing students and teachers in France have called for another strike Tuesday to keep up the pressure on the government to increase education spending.
Demonstrations were banned in the centers of several cities, including the western city of Rennes, following what authorities described as serious acts of violence there on Thursday. (QNA)
