Ministry of Environment: Electronic Waste Opportunity to Recover Valuable Resources for Reuse in Industrial Processes
Doha, October 14 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change affirmed that electronic waste (e-waste) presents an important opportunity to recover valuable materials and reuse them in industrial processes, helping reduce the consumption of natural resources and support the transition towards a circular economy.
At the same time, it stressed that e-waste poses an environmental challenge that requires greater awareness of safe and responsible handling practices.
In a statement marking International E-Waste Day, observed annually on Oct. 14, the ministry said that the occasion aims to raise public awareness of the importance of proper e-waste management and encourage the recycling of discarded electrical and electronic devices, contributing to environmental protection, the conservation of natural resources and the State of Qatar's efforts to achieve sustainable development.
The ministry added that its participation reflects its commitment to promoting a culture of responsible consumption, encouraging sustainable environmental practices and reducing the environmental impacts of improper disposal of electronic devices, particularly amid rapid technological advances and the accompanying increase in the use of devices of all kinds.
It noted that recycling e-waste helps reduce the need to extract new raw materials, limits the environmental impacts associated with manufacturing electronic devices, and promotes the optimal use of resources, in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and relevant national strategies.
As part of its efforts to facilitate community participation in environmental protection, the ministry announced the availability of a service allowing residents to request the collection of e-waste from their homes. The service aims to encourage individuals to dispose of unused devices properly and facilitate their transfer to appropriate collection and treatment facilities.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change called on all members of society and institutions to actively contribute to reducing e-waste by extending the lifespan of devices through maintenance and repair, reusing or donating functional equipment, and handing over damaged devices to the relevant authorities.
It also stressed that electronic devices and batteries should not be disposed of with ordinary household waste.
The ministry concluded its statement by affirming that environmental protection is a shared responsibility requiring concerted government and community efforts to promote a culture of sustainability and build a society more aware of its environmental responsibilities, ensuring the conservation of natural resources for present and future generations.
