Japan's Topix Hits Record High Despite US Pharma Tariffs
Tokyo, September 26 (QNA) - Japan's broad Topix index climbed to an all-time high on Friday, overcoming weakness in pharmaceutical stocks after the United States announced new tariffs on the sector.
The Topix rose 0.4% to 3,198.43, just shy of the session peak of 3,199.24.
By contrast, the tech-heavy Nikkei index slipped 0.3% to 45,604.82, retreating from Thursday's record close of 45,754.93, as chip-related shares mirrored overnight losses among US peers.
Real estate led gains among the Tokyo Stock Exchange's 33 industry groups, advancing 2.3%, while pharmaceuticals ranked near the bottom with a nearly 1% drop.
Market reaction within the drug sector was mixed following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 100% tariff on imports of branded or patented medicines starting October 1. (QNA)
