Madrid, September 21 (QNA) - Real Madrid strengthened its position atop the La Liga standings on Saturday with a 2-0 home victory over Espanyol in the fifth round of the Spanish football season.

Brazilian defender Eder Militao opened the scoring in the 21st minute, followed by a second goal from French forward Kylian Mbappe in the 47th.

The win marks Madrid’s fifth consecutive triumph, bringing its total to 15 points and maintaining a perfect record. The club now sits five points clear of archrival Barcelona, which is set to face Getafe on Sunday in the same round.

Espanyol, meanwhile, remains in third place with 10 points.

Elsewhere in the league, Levante cruised past Girona with a 4-0 win, Sevilla edged Alaves 2-1, and Villarreal defeated Osasuna by the same scoreline.

Sunday’s fixtures will wrap up the round with Rayo Vallecano hosting Celta Vigo, Real Mallorca facing Atletico Madrid, and Elche taking on Real Oviedo. (QNA)
