Spaniard Alcaraz Withdraws from Madrid Open Due to Injury
Madrid, April 24 (QNA) - Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, world No. 3, announced his withdrawal from the Madrid Open (ATP 1000) due to a thigh injury sustained during the final of Barcelona Open, where he lost to Denmark’s Holger Rune last Sunday.
The 21-year-old said in a press statement on Thursday that he had done everything possible to recover, but the injury had not improved significantly in recent days. He added that he chose not to take any risks to avoid a longer-term setback.
Alcaraz had not trained at all during the week leading up to the Madrid tournament, where he aimed to secure his third title in the Spanish capital, having previously won in 2022 and 2023.
While he did not rule out a return in time for Rome Masters (ATP 1000), Alcaraz confirmed his full commitment to competing in the French Open, which begins on May 25.
Earlier this month, Alcaraz claimed the title at the Monte Carlo Masters before competing in Barcelona. (QNA)
