Lusail Circuit Earns Three-Star FIA Environmental Accreditation
Doha, December 16 (QNA) - Lusail International Circuit has been awarded the highest three-star rating under the FIA Environmental Accreditation Program, recognizing its outstanding environmental performance.
This achievement makes Lusail the only circuit worldwide to host Formula 1, MotoGP, and World Endurance Championship races while holding a top-tier environmental rating.
The circuit emphasized sustainability, accessibility, and community engagement during the 4th Qatar Airways Formula 1 Grand Prix, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030 and Formula 1's global sustainability goals. Lusail also received recognition from the "Earthna" Foundation for its contribution to the 10th Qatar Sustainability Week 2025.
Preparations included educational programs for over 1,000 students, mangrove planting to support coastal ecosystems, and community events promoting health and motorsport engagement. Environmentally friendly design features at the circuit include 2,500 native trees, 30,000 drought-resistant plants, extensive green coverage, and rooftop vegetation.
Lusail is expanding its green spaces and monitoring air quality, noise, and climate conditions in real time. Renewable energy systems, including a 1.23 MW solar array, solar-powered lighting, and hybrid generators, support sustainable operations while powering major events.
Lusail International Circuit integrated advanced sustainability measures during the 4th Qatar Airways Formula 1 Grand Prix, earning the FIA three-star environmental accreditation.
The circuit operated a fully electric fleet, including shuttle buses, operational vehicles, waste trucks, and forklifts, supported by four charging stations, while all buses connecting the metro and circuit were electric. LED lighting and digital screens further reduced the carbon footprint.
Accessibility and inclusivity were prioritized, with sensory rooms for fans and students with special needs, and educational tours of the pit lane for 25 students. Volunteers from 107 nationalities engaged attendees in sustainability initiatives, including recycling games and awareness campaigns.
Waste management improvements included 90 percent digital ticketing, food composting, recycled signage, and the elimination of single-use plastics.
Seven sorting stations achieved an 86.6 percent recycling rate, while surplus food donations reached 400 kg. Free electric buses and metro rides logged 62,000 trips, reflecting increased low-emission transport use.
These initiatives collectively reduced the event’s carbon footprint per capita, enhanced audience experience, and reinforced Lusail’s position as a global leader in sustainable motorsport. (QNA)
