Ali Al Nuaimi, one of the supervisors of this event and curator of its dedicated museum, explained that the event was designed to embody Qatar's coastal life, drawing inspiration from the area's proximity to the sea and Souq Waqif, both of which were central to the lives of Al-Bidda residents in the past.
He said the event concept is based on linking the sea with popular markets as integrated spaces of social and economic activity for the community, highlighting that the event literally revives traditional folk games once practiced by members of Al-Bidda.
The event is primarily intended to familiarize the new generation with traditional manual maritime toolmaking, such as fishing nets, as these tools were traditionally made from natural materials, reflecting the simplicity of old life and reliance on local resources, he highlighted.
Al Nuaimi also addressed the awareness component of the event, explaining maritime parlance to the public and showcasing marine species and their diverse habitats, whether in shallow waters or in the depths of the sea. He also illustrated the types of fish, including predatory or venomous species, explaining that some carried long spines that were historically used after cleaning.
Broadly speaking, the event showcases a wide range of arts intimately tethered to maritime heritage and diving.
On this participation, Ali Nasser Al Haddad, a nahham of the Al Maha Folkloric Arts Troupe, said Al Maha's participation at Darb Al Saai represents a significant milestone in the revival of marine arts, noting that this year's event brought together a number of exhibitors to showcase the related arts in their time-honored collective form, which added a distinct quality to the performances.
Nahham Ali Al Haddad pointed out that Darb Al Saai offered an integrated model of attention to both land and maritime heritage, giving marine arts a genuine daily platform before visitors from among citizens, residents, and tourists, affirming that this engagement contributes to projecting the lives of forebears to visitors and promoting awareness of the value of heritage in building national identity.
