Doha, December 11 (QNA) - Iraq's head coach Graham Arnold emphasized the difficulty of his team's upcoming quarterfinal clash against Jordan, set to take place Friday at Education City Stadium in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Arnold noted that Jordan had impressed in the group stage with three consecutive wins, making them strong contenders for the title. He stressed the need for full physical and mental readiness from all Iraqi players to secure a place in the semifinals.
he said they've been preparing since the Algeria match, especially as some players are dealing with injuries and fatigue due to the tight match schedule, adding they'll select the best 11 players based on fitness and focus to face a very strong opponent.
Arnold revealed that striker Mohanad Ali might be fit to play, while goalkeeper Jalal Hassan is ruled out, and midfielder Hussein Ali will miss the match due to a red card received against Algeria. Despite the setbacks, he expressed full confidence in the squad's ability to perform.
He also highlighted that Iraq's main objective in this tournament is to prepare for the intercontinental playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in March, viewing the Arab Cup as a key step toward regaining a World Cup spot after more than 40 years.
Defender Saad Natiq echoed the coach's sentiments, affirming the team's readiness and determination to win. He said they have some absences, but they rely on a complete group of players who can step up and deliver, adding that both teams face a tough challenge and expressing confidence in Iraq's ability to advance.
