IFJ Says Palestine Tops Global Journalist Fatalities in 2025
Paris, December 10 (QNA) - The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) recorded 111 killings of journalists in 2025, including seven women, while documenting that over half of the cases occurred in Palestine, representing 62 percent of the total.
In its annual report released Wednesday, the IFJ described 2025 as one of the deadliest years for journalists worldwide, noting that the Middle East and the Arab region topped the list of the most dangerous areas, with 69 killings, 51 of them in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, resulting from deliberate targeting by Israeli occupation forces.
Ukraine recorded 8 cases, and Sudan 6, while Europe witnessed the killing of 10 journalists, alongside the increased use of drones for direct targeting, in addition to a significant upsurge in arrests, which reached 149 cases, the report read.
Attacks on journalists have surged amid a lack of true reactions from world governments. What is unfolding in terms of direct targeting and muzzling independent voices amounts to a clear breach of international law, warned IFJ President Dominique Pradalie.
She stressed that protecting journalists is a right of all societies to reach the truth, calling for pursuing binding global mechanisms to ensure the safety of journalists. (QNA)
