Qatar Takes Part in Sixth Meeting of Minamata Convention on Mercury in Geneva
Doha, November 08 (QNA) - The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), participated in the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-6) to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
Having convened official delegations and experts from a variety of countries around the world, the meeting was part of global efforts to prevent mercury contamination and reduce its deleterious impacts on human health and the environment.
It addressed a range of subjects aimed at enhancing the Convention's provisions, foremost among them combating the illicit trafficking of mercury, reducing emissions from artisanal gold mining, and enforcing the ban on skin‑lightening products containing mercury compounds.
The meeting further discussed measures for phasing out mercury dental fillings and moving toward safer, environmentally friendly alternatives.
Overall, Qatar's participation underscored its commitment to international environmental agreements while reinforcing national measures to protect the environment and public health, consistent with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the SDGs. (QNA)
