Doha Political Declaration/ Highlights Doha Programme of Action for LDCs as a Global Reference
Doha, November 04 (QNA) - The Doha Political Declaration, issued Tuesday at the ongoing Second Global Social Development Summit in Doha, highlighted the Doha Programme of Action, adopted during the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) hosted by Qatar in May 2023, affirming the commitment to support and implement plans, strategies, and development programmes relevant to countries facing special circumstances.
The Doha Political Declaration emphasized that every country encounters specific challenges in its pursuit of sustainable development, particularly developing nations, including African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island developing states, as well as the particular challenges facing middle-income countries and nations undergoing conflict or post-conflict situations.
The declaration renewed the commitment to support and implement initiatives targeting countries in special circumstances, including the Doha Programme of Action, the Awaza Programme of Action for landlocked developing countries, and the Antigua and Barbuda Plan of Action for small island developing states.
It also reaffirmed support for the African Union's Agenda 2063 and called on the UN development system to prepare a specific, comprehensive, and coordinated response plan across its agencies dedicated to middle-income countries.
The declaration stressed that keeping pace with a rapidly changing world and addressing global social development challenges requires strengthening the multilateral system and its institutions, foremost among them the United Nations and its Charter.
This system and its institutions must be fit for the present and the future, characterized by effectiveness, efficiency, justice, democracy, equity, representation of today's world, inclusivity, connectivity, and financial stability.
The Doha Political Declaration further underlined the earnest pursuit of a future that is inclusive, resilient, sustainable, and just, aiming for a world free of poverty, hunger, unemployment, preventable diseases, racism, discrimination, and insecurity; a world rooted in equality, fairness, shared prosperity, and peace, where the dignity of all people is respected, and no one is left behind.
