Police Academy Organizes Workshop on Airport Security Challenges
Doha, November 27 (QNA) - The Police Academy, represented by the Center for Security Research and Studies, in cooperation with the Airport Security Department, organized a scientific symposium on airport security challenges and emerging artificial intelligence technologies.
The symposium was attended by HE Legal Advisor to the Minister of Interior and General Supervisor of the Police Academy Major General Dr. Abdullah Yousef Al Mal along with several directors of departments at the Ministry of Interior, representatives from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority and Qatar Customs Authority, as well as a delegation from the sisterly Sultanate of Oman representing the General Directorate of Airport Security.
The symposium aimed to analyze the security landscape in airports and examine the role of AI technologies in risk prediction and behavioral analysis, in addition to discussing the legal and ethical challenges associated with the use of these technologies.
Specialists from relevant entities presented a number of scientific, research, and practical recommendations aimed at supporting the development of the airport security system.
Experts from the concerned authorities spoke at the symposium, which focused on two main themes: the first explored airport security strategies in the face of AI challenges and the opportunities technology provides to address security threats. The second examined the legal, regulatory, and ethical dimensions of using artificial intelligence.
In this context, Director of Airport Security Colonel (Staff) Khamis Mohammed Al Muraikhi emphasized that the symposium reflects the commitment to maintaining the highest security standards in airports, one of the most vital environments, while keeping pace with technological advancements. He added that airport security is an integrated system based on knowledge, planning, institutional cooperation, and adherence to regulations and societal values, highlighting the need for a model based on continuous vigilance, organizational flexibility, and increasing reliance on AI technologies.
For his part, Director of the Center for Security Research and Studies at the Police Academy Colonel Dr. Jassim Mohammed Al Khamees Al Obaidli, noted that airport security is an integrated system dependent on coordination between agencies, field expertise, scientific knowledge, and advanced technologies in monitoring, analysis, and risk management, emphasizing the need to develop tools and concepts proactively in anticipation of risks.
The first session was moderated by Brigadier Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Subaih, Director of the Community Police Department, and addressed security challenges in airports and emerging AI technologies.
The first paper was presented by Director of Security Systems at the General Directorate of Communications and Information Systems Lt. Col. Engineer Ali Abdullah Al Suwaidi on Artificial Intelligence opportunities and security challenges.
The second paper was presented by Director of Hamad International Airport Customs Ajab Mansour Al Qahtani and discussed the handling of smuggling attempts within airport environments.
The session concluded with a paper presented by Assistant Director of Airport Security Major Zayed Rashid Al Nuaimi which addressed the Airport Security Department’s strategy and its response to emerging AI technology challenges.
The second session, moderated by Colonel Dr. Jassim Mohammed Al-Khamees Al-Obaidli, focused on the regulatory, legal, and ethical dimensions of using AI in airport security.
The first paper was presented by Captain Khalid Naji Al-Habbabi, Head of Studies and Research at the Center for Security Research and Studies, and explored the legal challenges and controls governing the use of AI in the security domain.
The second paper was presented by Nawaf Fawaz Al Ajmi from the Security and Facilitation Department of the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, and discussed national regulations and policies for airport security.
The session concluded with a paper by Captain Dr. Khalifa Ahmed Al Kuwari, a faculty member at the Police College, who reviewed legal responsibility for AI-driven decisions in airport security, along with the legal challenges and international dimensions associated with them. (QNA)
