Jordan Reaffirms Need for Political and Financial Support for UNRWA
Amman, November 19 (QNA) - Jordan reiterated the need to mobilize international support to provide the necessary political and financial assistance to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) so that it can continue its vital role in providing essential services to the Palestinian people in its five areas of operation, in accordance with its UN mandate.
In a speech during the meeting of the Agency's Advisory Commission, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Al Safadi emphasized the central role played by UNRWA in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which is suffering an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe as a result of Israeli aggression.
Al Safadi stressed that no one can fulfill the role that the Agency plays in the Strip to address the humanitarian crisis there. He reiterated Jordan's rejection and condemnation of the draft resolutions in the Israeli Knesset targeting UNRWA's presence, immunities, and headquarters in the occupied Palestinian territories, considering them a blatant violation of international law and a deprivation of the Palestinian people of vital rights and services recognized by the international community.
He warned that Israel's continued targeting of the UN agency is part of its attempt to liquidate the refugee issue, which must be resolved in accordance with international law and resolutions guaranteeing the refugees' right of return and compensation.
It is worth noting that the UNRWA Advisory Commission meets twice a year to discuss issues of concern to the agency and to advise and assist the Commissioner-General. (QNA)
