Qatar Loses to Zimbabwe in Arab Cup Warm-up
Doha, November 17 (QNA) - Qatar's national football team lost 2-1 to visiting Zimbabwe in a friendly match on Monday at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, part of its preparations for the Arab Cup, which will be held in Doha from Dec. 1 to 18.
The game also formed part of Qatar's longer-term plan to gear up for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Mohammed Khalid opened the scoring for Qatar in the ninth minute, but Zimbabwe responded with goals from Munashe Garananga and Bill Antonio in the 24th and 74th minutes.
The match was of average quality, with both sides sharing spells of control. Zimbabwe overturned its early deficit in the second half, while Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui used the opportunity to field a wide range of young players from his training camp as he evaluates options for the Arab Cup roster.
This international break is Qatar's final tune-up before the Arab Cup. The host nation will play the tournament's opening match Dec. 1 at Al Bayt Stadium against the winner of a playoff between Palestine and Libya. Group A also includes Tunisia and the winner of another playoff between Syria and South Sudan. (QNA)
