Jakarta, July 09 (QNA) - An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck on Thursday north of Sulawesi Island in the city of Bitung, Indonesia.

The US Geological Survey said in a statement that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 35 kilometers. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage resulting from the earthquake so far.

Earthquakes frequently hit different parts of Indonesia, as it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

Last month, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck central Indonesia at a depth of 10 km. (QNA)
