Rabat. May 06 (QNA) - The 46th session of the Executive Council of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) commenced today at the organization's headquarters in Rabat, with remote participation from representatives of 44 member states.
In his opening remarks, Chairperson of ICESCO Executive Council, Dr. Dawas Taysir Dawas emphasized that the session is being held amid a global climate marked by uncertainty and a growing scale of challenges and transformations. This, he noted, necessitates intensified efforts and unified visions to enhance the effectiveness of the organization's work and to consolidate its position as a leading center of expertise in its fields of specialization.
He added that holding the session remotely reflects ICESCO's commitment to sustaining multilateral, collaborative work, while demonstrating its ability to adapt to rapid developments and unforeseen events without compromising institutional performance. He further stressed that this session carries significant electoral importance, reinforcing the principles of transparency and responsible rotation in leadership roles.
For his part, Director-General of ICESCO, Dr. Salem bin Mohammed Al Malik stated that the organization is continuing its path of renewal and modernization, adopting a comprehensive and practical approach that strengthens its standing among leading international organizations. He noted that ICESCO has recently obtained around 15 accreditations and certifications across various fields, in addition to being recognized as a creative organization and an evaluator of innovation.
Dr. Al Malik added that ICESCO is looking forward to exceptional engagement from member states in the coming years. He explained that the next phase will involve the development of a strategy that goes beyond short-term planning to anticipate post-2030 requirements. In this context, he highlighted that ICESCO has already integrated the Sustainable Development Goals into the core of its 2026-2029 strategy, linking them directly to institutional governance frameworks and decision-making mechanisms.
He further pointed out that the preparation of this strategy was not based solely on data analysis of international indicators and global reports, but also drew on direct consultations with relevant officials and experts. He underscored that the concept of sustainable development must be grounded in an understanding of evolving cultural, civilizational, and social contexts; making flexibility a key feature of planning and enabling adaptive responses to global shifts.
Following the opening session, working meetings commenced, featuring presentations by ICESCO leadership on the performance reports of its sectors, departments, and specialized centers. The session's agenda also includes the election of a new Executive Council President and bureau members, as well as new members of the Financial Control Committee.
In addition, participants will review Turkmenistan's request to join the organization as an observer and discuss the draft strategic plan for 2026-2029. (QNA)
