Japan's Nikkei Closes Higher
Tokyo, August 04 (QNA) - Japan's Nikkei index closed higher on Tuesday, supported by strong demand for shares of companies linked to the semiconductor industry, despite continued investor caution over the possibility that the authorities could intervene again to buy the yen.
The Nikkei closed up 0.32 percent at 63,957.53 points, after fluctuating between gains and losses, while the broader Topix index rose 0.04 percent to 3,961.78 points.
Shares of most semiconductor-related companies advanced, with Fujikura, the cable and optical fiber manufacturer, surging 7.88 percent.
Shares of memory-chip maker Kioxia also climbed about 6 percent, while Tokyo Electron, the chipmaking equipment manufacturer, gained 3.11 percent.
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor fell 1.52 percent, while the market generally leaned lower, with 129 stocks on the Nikkei declining, compared with 94 that advanced and two that were unchanged.
NH Foods topped the list of losers, with its shares falling 8.41 percent, followed by glass and chemicals manufacturer AGC, whose shares dropped 7.88 percent. Meanwhile, Yamaha Motor led the gainers, with its shares rising 13.4 percent, while Furukawa Electric also advanced 11.44 percent. (QNA)
