Kyiv, August 23 (QNA) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rebuffed calls to hold elections in the country amid the war with Russia, saying such a move would be extremely dangerous.
Commenting on a call from former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to hold elections, Zelenskyy said in a war like this, elections per se would pose a massive risk, stressing that these polls would resemble a tsunami that would split Ukraine.
Holding these polls amid the current circumstances would destroy the country, he added.
The Ukrainian authorities have put the elections on hold since the start of the Russian war in February 2022 and imposed martial law, a measure that still enjoys broad support among the population.
Ukraine has recently gone through a wave of turmoil, with thousands of residents taking to the streets after Zelenskyy sacked Fedorov from his position in July 2026. (QNA)
