Celebrating Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language as Achievement in Age of AI
Doha, December 22 (QNA) - The Arab cultural scene today witnessed an exceptional event marked by the celebration of the completion of the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, which is one of the largest linguistic projects in the Arab world and globally.
The completion of the dictionary represents a pivotal milestone in the study of the Arabic language and its semantic history. It stands as the most significant Arab project accomplished in accordance with modern standards of global historical dictionaries, placing in the hands of researchers a thoroughly documented linguistic corpus spanning from the earliest authenticated Arabic text to the present day across twenty centuries. It provides a comprehensive historical map of the development of words and their meanings through the ages.
With its vast linguistic corpus and verified data, the dictionary has contributed to laying a new knowledge foundation that today supports the development of linguistic and research applications, as well as efforts to build Arabic language models in the era of artificial intelligence.
This event constitutes a major Arab scholarly occasion that combines celebrating the completion of a historical Arabic dictionary project with launching an in-depth scientific discussion on the future of the Arabic language in the age of artificial intelligence. It further strengthens Doha’s position as a leading regional center of knowledge and linguistics, and underscores its role in supporting Arabic linguistic research and modern language technologies.
The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies launched the project to build a historical dictionary of the Arabic language on May 25, 2013. These efforts culminated in the completion of a historical dictionary containing nearly 300,000 lexical entries and a text corpus comprising approximately one billion words, structured, dated, and fully documented.
This dictionary is unique in tracing Arabic vocabulary from its earliest usage in inscriptions and texts, documenting the changes in word forms and meanings within their textual contexts, and following the chronological trajectory of this development. The electronic portal presents the dictionary’s content, enables searching within the text corpus, and offers several types of linguistic, textual, and statistical services.
On the occasion of World Arabic Language Day, the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language announced on Thursday, December 18, 2025, the launch of its new electronic portal. This step aims to enhance the presence of Arabic in the digital space and facilitate access to its historical lexicographical content through a modern interface and advanced search tools that serve researchers and those interested in the Arabic language around the world.
