Gaza's Farmland Nears Collapse, UN Warns
Rome, August 18 (QNA) - The United Nations warned Tuesday that only 3 percent of Gaza's agricultural land remains intact, cultivable, and accessible to farmers, with most of the sector's farmland damaged by the war.
The FAO and the UN Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) said the deterioration is mainly due to restrictions on access to farmland and the westward shift of the "Yellow Line".
Farmers and livestock breeders are also facing severe shortages of fertilizers, seeds, fuel, and animal feed, worsened by restrictions at border crossings.
The assessment found that usable, undamaged agricultural land fell from 601 hectares in October 2025 to just 448 hectares by the end of June 2026, a 25.5 percent decline.
Only 16.6 percent of greenhouses remain usable, while more than 97 percent of cultivable land in Rafah is inaccessible to farmers.
FAO Emergency Response Director Rein Paulsen warned that without urgent action to ensure safe access to farmland and provide support, prospects for restoring local food production will further diminish. (QNA)
