6.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Central Indonesia
Jakarta, June 16 (QNA) - An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck central Indonesia on Tuesday.
The earthquake was located 42 km east of Palu, a city on Sulawesi Island, and at a depth of 10 km, according to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Earthquakes regularly strike various parts of Indonesia, which lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates collide, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia. (QNA)
