Athens, June 15 (QNA) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck southwest of the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece.

The Institute of Geodynamics of the University of Athens reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers, approximately 16 kilometers off the coast of the small town of Methoni.

No damage has been recorded so far, although the earthquake had been clearly felt, said Panagiotis Karvelas, the region's mayor, in a statement to the Hellenic Radio.

Greek media reported that the earthquake was also felt by residents in western Crete.

Greece lies in a seismically active region and experiences strong earthquakes from time to time. (QNA)
