Tokyo, February 12 (QNA) - Japan requested the United States on Tuesday to be exempt from Trump's new 25 percent tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum imports.

Japan's Trade Minister Yoji Muto said in a press conference that Tokyo had requested that its steel and aluminum products be exempted from the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, adding that Japan will closely examine the impact of US tariff measures on Japanese companies and will take necessary actions.

On the other hand, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said that his country had already submitted a request to be exempted from the new US tariffs, adding that his government intends to study the details of these measures and their potential impact on Japan, and take the necessary steps.

The request was made through the Japanese embassy in the United States on Wednesday, he explained.

US President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Monday imposing 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to the United States.

According to Japanese media, Japanese steel accounts for about 4 percent of total US imports. (QNA)
