Japan, Spain Qualify for Round of 16

Doha, December 01 (QNA) - Japan secured a 2-1 win over Spain and both teams progressed to the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Japan and Spain played at Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday in final round of matches in Group E.
The Japanese team raised their points to 6 and topped the group after they had beaten their German counterpart 2-1 in the first round, but they lost to Costa Rica 0-1 in the second round. The Spanish team finished second with 4 points after a victory over Costa Rica 7-0 in the first round, and a goalless draw with Germany in the second round.
In the other match in the same group, Germany made a 4-2 win against Costa Rica and the two teams were eliminated from the World Cup. Germany finished third with 4 points, equal with Spain but Spain squeak through to the round of 16 on goal difference, while Costa Rica finished fourth with 3 points.
In today's match, Japan scored twice early in the second half to defeat Spain 2-1 and advance to the round of 16 of the World Cup. Alvaro Morata scored first for Spain in the 12th. (QNA)
