With Narrowest Margins in History of Brazilian Democracy, Lula da Silva Wins Third Presidential Term - Report
Doha, October 31 (QNA) - In unprecedented victory and after three years of imprisonment, former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has wrapped up the second round of the presidential elections in his country, achieving a historic victory against his far-right rival Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula da Silva, 77 years old, received a third presidential term after defeating Bolsonaro by a narrow margin, described as the smallest discrepancies and narrowest margins in the history of Brazilian democracy, whilst the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in Brazil proclaimed his victory by earning 50.90 percent of votes, while Bolsonaro received 49.10 percent of votes.
By this victory, the new president terminates the most tumultuous presidential race in the history of Brazil adding this new victory to the list of the leftist leaders who have resumed power in recent years across Latin America.
The de facto president Bolsonaro remained silent after losing the elections while the local popular protests started to loom, and his proponents have closed and barricaded several roads, amid the fierce campaigns of elections, where Brazil has been suffering from popular divisions with a profound political polarization punctuated by the enormous amount of information being relayed via social media platforms, while the two contenders have been trading barbs before millions of spectators. Meanwhile, Bolsonaro kept attacking the democratic institutions in Brazil leading to the loss of trust in the fairness of elections in this country.
In addition, hunger is considered a very decisive issue in Brazil, as the country has suffered from poverty for decades and has been the epicenter of horrible famines, especially in the northeast of the country, however, the situation has significantly improved under the leadership of Lula da Silva.
Lula da Silva delivered his victory address Sunday evening by announcing that his country needs peace and unity, adding that the country has returned to the international scene and does not need to be excluded anymore, stressing that no one has the interest to live in a disintegrated nation with permanent conflict cycle.
He is the first working-class president and orator with a profound charisma who embarked on applying for ambitious social programs thanks to the years of economic growth undergirded by the primary materials. He showed up wearing a bullet-proof suit and toured the sprawling areas across the country, which is also very popular, especially in the northeastern areas of the poor country, his historic stronghold.
He stated that the overwhelming majority of the Brazilian people want more democracy and not the least, lashing out at his conservative rival due to the way of handling the COVID-19 pandemic, what he called the crumbling economy of the country, and the deforestation in the Amazon area.
The Brazilian president said he is convinced that his country will be a country for all people starting from next January marking his coronation as president of Brazil, adding the country will emerge on the international scene to further contribute to building a better world, accusing the outgoing president of denying science, increasing the climate change phenomenon and undermining the democracy, pointing out that his government will attract the international investors to create more job opportunities and reinvigorate the economy.
