Madrid, September 09 (QNA) - Spain's Real Madrid defeated Italy's Inter Milan 2-1 on Tuesday evening in the opening match of the first round of the unified group stage for the 2026-2027 UEFA Champions League.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 14th minute, followed by Federico Valverde in the 23rd minute, while Carlos Augusto scored for Inter Milan in the 77th minute.
With this result, Real Madrid, holding a record 15 tournament titles, secured three points as they begin their campaign for a 16th crown, while Inter Milan, a three-time champion, remains without points.
In other opening-round fixtures, England's Manchester City defeated hosts FC Porto of Portugal 2-0 to claim three points. Spain's Real Betis defeated France's Lille 3-2, Greece's AEK Athens secured a 1-0 victory over Austria's LASK, Borussia Dortmund edged Spain's Villarreal 3-2, and England's Aston Villa defeated Belgium's Club Brugge by the same scoreline.
Paris Saint-Germain, winner of the past two consecutive titles, begins its title defense on Wednesday against Slovan Bratislava. Other Wednesday matchups include Barcelona versus Feyenoord, Napoli against Arsenal, Liverpool facing Atletico Madrid, and Sporting CP playing Galatasaray. (QNA)
