Arab League Chief, UN Envoy to Libya Confer on Efforts to Advance Political Process
Cairo, September 29 (QNA) - Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Nabil Fahmy met Tuesday with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya Hanna Tetteh to discuss the latest political and security developments in Libya, as well as efforts to lend impetus to the political process.
During the meeting, Fahmy underscored his support for the UN's efforts in Libya, stressing that what matters most is that Libya should have full discretion over its political process.
He also underlined the importance of enhancing coordination with regional organizations, namely the African Union and the Arab League, with the objective of reaching an enduring political solution in Libya.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) highlighted that Tetteh apprised Fahmy of recent developments in Libya, including the outcomes of the Smaller Convening and the next steps, as well as the recommendations of the UN-facilitated Structured Dialogue.
She stressed the importance of incorporating the outcomes of the Structured Dialogue into collective efforts aimed at creating the conditions conducive to holding elections in Libya within 24 months.
Tetteh has been ramping up her communications with Libyan parties, as well as regional and international partners, as part of UN-backed efforts to push the political process forward, hold elections and end the country's political division.
Libya was slated to hold presidential and legislative elections in December 2021, but they were postponed indefinitely due to standoffs among political parties. (QNA)
