6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands in Atlantic Ocean
London, September 03 (QNA) - An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 125.9 km, the US Geological Survey reported.
The region experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location at the intersection of the South American and Antarctic tectonic plates.
In August 2021, the South Sandwich Islands experienced a powerful earthquake that exceeded 8 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, there were no casualties or significant damage due to its remote location and lack of population. (QNA)
