Kinshasa, August 07 (QNA) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Friday that the authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had released 15 detainees and transferred them to the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement (AFC/M23).
In a statement, the ICRC said the released detainees departed the government-controlled city of Beni in a convoy on Thursday evening. They traveled through Uganda before being handed over to the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement in the Rutshuru area of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Stephanie Eller, the ICRC's Head of Operations in Kinshasa, expressed hope that the operation would "bring relief to families who have been separated from their loved ones for a long time."
The release was carried out under the mechanism for the release of detained persons signed in Doha in September last year as part of the Doha Peace Process. (QNA)
