LoginQatar Students Head to Campuses Sunday to Kick Off New School Year
Doha, August 29 (QNA) - Students in the State of Qatar are heading to school campuses Sunday, Aug. 30, to embark on class attendance, marking the kickoff of the new school year 2026-2027.
This comes amid intensified preparations finalized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) to ensure an organized and strong start to the new academic year.
The Ministry emphasized that all required school and operational equipment have been primed to receive students, in terms of human resources, educational materials and logistical support, thereby helping enhance students' distinction ahead of their admission to higher education institutions, particularly in majors that support the knowledge-based economy and foster Qatar's pioneering efforts.
The Ministry said 649 public and private schools and kindergartens are preparing to welcome 419,373 students across various grade levels as the new school year commences Sunday.
As part of efforts to expand capacity and keep abreast of increasing demand for education, MOEHE opened six new public schools with a variety of classes, offering 3,600 seats in several parts of the country. Additionally, maintenance and renovation operations at public schools have been completed, with facilities customized to welcome students.
Regarding the educational workforce, MOEHE said the number of teachers in public schools and kindergartens stands at 17,679, alongside 25,372 teachers and administrative staff in private schools and kindergartens.
It noted that its preparations included the recruitment of 210 teachers from among participants in the "Tamouh Program", which MOEHE implements in collaboration with Qatar University's (QU) College of Education, to fill teaching vacancies in public schools.
In terms of supporting the professional development of the pedagogical workforce, the Ministry highlighted that its educational orientation program included more than 15 training workshops that laser-focused on educational and pedagogical practices, as well as performance development.
The events also paid homage to those affiliated with the Qiyadat, Tamheen and Bidaya Mowafaqa programs, in recognition of educational talent and in support of professional and leadership development in the education sector, the Ministry noted.
The Ministry added that the Training and Development Center's operations are underway to implement training plans approved for a range of educational workforces throughout the school year, to ensure the upgrading of aptitudes and keeping up with the educational sector's needs.
In the private school sector, the Ministry said there are 156 operating childcare centers, while seven more childcare centers are in the licensing process and are expected to open during the 2026-27 school year. In addition, 81 childcare centers accommodate children with mild disabilities who require inclusion.
The Ministry also provided 14,561 school seats under the private schools' social responsibility initiative, including tuition-free seats and others offered at reduced tuition, as well as subsidized seats through the school voucher program, thereby enhancing educational opportunities and expanding the education options available to students.
Regarding student transportation, MOEHE said it has provided 3,000 school buses of various sizes to serve students, in addition to allocating 122 buses and 400 cars to transport students with disabilities.
As part of efforts to enhance school health and safety, the Ministry approved 26 qualified food suppliers to supply food to cafeterias in public schools and established a list of approved food items in accordance with health standards.
It also completed health and safety requirements and enhanced air-conditioning and cooling services, providing a healthy, safe and engaging school environment for students.
At the level of academic and organizational readiness, schools completed the preparation of class schedules and the assignment of students to classes, in addition to providing textbooks and instructional materials and organizing orientation sessions for new staff to introduce them to the Ministry's policies and plans and the regulations governing educational work.
Administrative and teaching staff began work on Aug. 23 to complete academic, administrative and organizational readiness requirements and prepare the school environment ahead of welcoming students as the new school year begins Sunday. (QNA)
