Washington, August 24 (QNA) - The United States officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday.

The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) updated its sanctions regulations, removing Syria from the list after the legal procedures related to the congressional review concluded without objection.

According to the update published on the Treasury Department's official website, Syria is no longer subject to the provisions of the State Sponsors of Terrorism regulations, including restrictions on financial and banking transactions.

The move follows a notification sent by US President Donald Trump to Congress on July 8 regarding the start of procedures to revoke the designation.

The decision took effect immediately and forms part of OFAC's periodic amendments to its regulations, reflecting the latest legal and procedural developments adopted by the US administration.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement that “the Treasury is fulfilling President Trump's promise to give the Syrian people an opportunity to build greatness,” adding that the move would help encourage additional investment in Syria to support political and economic stability.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced in early July that Syria would be removed from the list, but the decision required congressional review before becoming official.

Following the expiration of the review period, the State and Treasury Departments said sanctions related to the designation had been lifted almost entirely. (QNA)
