Gaza, August 17 (QNA) - The Government Media Office in Gaza issued an urgent appeal to save displaced Palestinians from the cataclysmic conditions they are reeling from in the enclave.
In a press statement Monday, the office clamored for global action to break what it termed the "Israeli veto" imposed on the entry of life-saving humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Subsequently, it called for allowing access to temporary housing units, "caravans," along with shelter necessities, as more than two million Gazans are plagued by formidable humanitarian conditions.
The total number of displaced families in the Gaza enclave had reached 509,393, accounting for more than 2.15 million people, including almost 1.027 million in shelters and 1.122 million staying outside them, the statement continued.
The statement added that among them, almost 196,000 families, including more than 867,000 members, live in rudimentary, decrepit tents unfit for human habitation and require immediate replacement.
The office condemned the Israeli intentional ban on caravans, construction materials and rental programs, despite needs and costs that have been presented to international entities.
It further lashed out at the global silence over the freezing of rubble removal programs and infrastructure renovation, the fundamental basis for early recovery.
In addition, the office warned of an impending humanitarian catastrophe with the approaching winter season, recalling that these dilapidated tents shelter extremely vulnerable people who face complex health and mental risks, including 46,000 elderly people, 23,000 widows, 59,000 orphans and 15,000 persons with disabilities.
This is alongside more than half a million children who are prone to illnesses and death due to a shortage of warmth and safe shelters, the statement said.
The office called for resolute international pressure to ensure unconditional access to these caravan materials without any throttling, with priority to be given to families headed by women, including pregnant women and nursing mothers, as well as children and the elderly.
The statement further urged UN organizations and donors to give shelter and rubble removal programs, as well as sanitation rehabilitation, overriding priority in terms of funding.
It called on human rights institutions to document the crime of depriving civilians of the right to housing and the act of weaponizing shelters as a tool for forced displacement, and ultimately submit these reports to international courts to hold the Israeli occupation accountable. (QNA)
