Doha, August 17 (QNA) - Qatar's Years of Culture initiative, the country's long-term cultural exchange programme, is marking a vibrant summer of international programming, with major exhibitions in Mexico, Chile and China bringing Qatar's creative partnerships to audiences across the world.

Spanning three continents, the programme reflects the growing international reach of the Years of Culture initiative and its commitment to building lasting relationships. From football and the shared memories of the FIFA World Cup in Mexico City, to contemporary cinema and video art in Santiago, and Qatar's Bedouin heritage in Beijing, each project offers a distinct perspective on the country while creating new opportunities for intercultural dialogue.

Adviser to the Years of Culture initiative for Latin America, Mohammed Jassim Al Kuwari said the programme was founded on a simple principle: enduring relationships are built over time through mutual understanding.

"This summer brings that idea to life," he said. "In Mexico, we are building new connections through this year's cultural partnership; in Chile, we are continuing to nurture relationships established last year; and in China, a project first launched as part of a previous Year of Culture is reaching a new audience. These programmes create opportunities for people to come closer together and gain a deeper understanding of one another through culture."

Four years after Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 - becoming the first Arab country to stage the tournament - Mexico is preparing to host the World Cup once again as one of the tournament's host nations.

Against this backdrop, two exhibitions in Mexico City have used football to explore how sporting moments can tell deeper stories about culture, identity and the connections between people.

Organised by the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum and Museo Jumex, Pieces of Glory: Iconic Moments in Football History traces more than a century of the sport through objects associated with some of its most memorable moments, including items linked to legendary players such as Pele and Diego Maradona.

Elsewhere in the city, at the Centre for Digital Culture, Towards Glory: The Legacy of Qatar 2022 turns its focus to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Through archival material, photographs, multimedia installations, personal testimonies and tournament memorabilia, the exhibition revisits the 2022 World Cup as a defining moment when millions of people encountered Qatar and the wider Arab world.

In Chile, meanwhile, the summer programme poses a different question: what remains after an official year of partnership comes to an end?

The cultural relationships established during the Qatar-Argentina-Chile 2025 Year of Culture have continued to develop, building on connections forged through shared experiences of migration, storytelling and cinema.

At Santiago's Centro Cultural La Moneda, the exhibition Our Ghosts, Your Ghosts: Promising Visions for a Radical Cinema opened this month in its Latin American debut. The exhibition brings together films and video works by artists and filmmakers from the Arab world, Africa and Southeast Asia, exploring themes of memory, displacement, identity and belonging across cultures and geographies.

The exhibition features works from the collections of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and the future Art Mill Museum, alongside contributions from the Doha Film Institute.

It also advances a broader proposition: that cinema and video are integral to the history of contemporary art, and that this history becomes richer when it incorporates voices and perspectives that have often been marginalised by dominant narratives.

For the Years of Culture initiative, however, Santiago represents more than an exhibition venue.

"The arrival of the exhibition in Santiago embodies an important principle at the heart of the Years of Culture initiative: the end of a partnership year does not mean the end of the relationships," Al Kuwari said.

That principle has become increasingly central to the initiative. Cultural exchange is measured not only by what takes place during a designated year, but also by the opportunities and possibilities that emerge after it ends.

In China, at the National Museum of China in Beijing, Nomadic Life Reimagined, organised by the National Museum of Qatar, introduces visitors to the knowledge, traditions and ways of life that shaped Qatar's Bedouin and semi-nomadic past.

The exhibition explores life in Qatar from the 18th century until the discovery of oil, a period when mobility and nomadism were essential to understanding the landscape and the means of survival within it.

Objects, photographs, films and oral histories highlight the skills and traditions that developed in response to this environment, including tentmaking, Al Sadu weaving, relationships with animals, and the knowledge required to navigate and survive in the desert.

The exhibition itself has become rooted in the concept of movement and mobility. It was first developed as part of the Qatar-Middle East, North Africa and South Asia 2022 Year of Culture and presented at the National Museum of Qatar alongside the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Two years later, it travelled to the National Museum of Mongolia. This summer, it has arrived in Beijing through a collaboration between the National Museum of Qatar and the National Museum of China.

Since its launch in 2012, the Years of Culture initiative has expanded across a broad range of fields, including exhibitions, heritage, design, photography, cinema, sport, education and community programmes.

Its annual partnerships provide a starting point for cultural exchange, while the initiative's impact extends beyond the end of each designated year through the relationships, projects and new opportunities that emerge from them.

From football in Mexico City to cinema in Santiago and Qatar's nomadic heritage in Beijing, this summer's programme demonstrates the initiative's evolving approach to cultural diplomacy - one in which a single exhibition can become the beginning, rather than the conclusion, of a lasting international relationship.
