MECC: 12,844 Invasive Myna Birds Captured since January

Doha, August 15 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), represented by the Wildlife Development Department, announced that its national project to limit and control the invasive Myna bird population in the Qatari environment continues to achieve tangible results by curbing the spread of the species and reducing its impact on the country's ecosystems and biodiversity.

MECC said the project's efforts led to the capture of 12,844 invasive Myna birds between January and July, bringing the total number captured since the launch of the project to 61,999.

The ministry noted that control operations have expanded geographically, with 849 cages deployed across 58 locations to improve monitoring and control of the bird population in targeted areas.

MECC affirmed its continued commitment to combating the invasive Myna bird through a well-defined plan aimed at limiting its spread, protecting native species and biodiversity, and maintaining the natural balance of ecosystems, in a way that supports Qatar's efforts in wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.

It added that the Myna bird is an invasive species that can place pressure on native wildlife by competing for food sources and nesting sites, in addition to its potential impact on native plants, birds, and ecological balance. (QNA)
