Argentina Reach Round of 16 After Extra-Time Win Over Cape Verde, Set Up Egypt Clash
Miami, July 04 (QNA) - Defending champions Argentina survived a spirited challenge from World Cup debutants Cape Verde, securing a 3-2 extra-time victory on Friday to book a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
Argentina will face Egypt in the Round of 16 on Tuesday after edging Cape Verde in a hard-fought Round-of-32 clash at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Captain Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, taking his World Cup tally to 20 goals and extending his lead atop the tournament's scoring charts with seven goals. Cape Verde responded through Deroy Duarte in the 58th minute, forcing extra time after regulation ended in a 1-1 draw.
Lisandro Martinez restored Argentina's lead in the 92nd minute, but Cabral equalized for Cape Verde in the 102nd before Cristian Romero struck the winner in the 111th minute to send the title holders through.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced a series of outstanding saves, including denying Messi in a one-on-one and keeping out a dangerous free kick, but Argentina's experience ultimately proved decisive as it kept its title defense on course.
Despite the defeat, Cape Verde bowed out after a historic debut World Cup campaign in which it reached the knockout stage. (QNA)
