Arab League, US Stress Need to Advance Libya Political Process and End Sudan War
Cairo, July 18 (QNA) - The Arab League and the United States underscored Saturday the importance of continuing coordination, joint action, and regular exchanges of views and assessments to advance the political process in Libya.
They also emphasized the need to support ongoing efforts to end the war in Sudan, mitigate humanitarian suffering, and consolidate security and stability in the region.
This came during a meeting Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy held at the League's General Secretariat in Cairo with Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos.
Both sides discussed the latest developments in Libya and the crisis in Sudan and explored ways to strengthen regional and international efforts to address these issues.
Boulos outlined the US assessments of the evolving situations in Libya and Sudan, as well as American proposals for addressing each issue based on its specific circumstances.
He praised the pivotal role the League plays in supporting de-escalation efforts and political settlements in the region.
On Libya, Fahmy reaffirmed full support for advancing a fully Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, with the aim of unifying national institutions and holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
He underscored the bloc's longstanding position on safeguarding Libya's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
On the crisis in Sudan, Fahmy reiterated the League's iron-clad position calling for an immediate ceasefire, urging cooler heads to prevail, prioritizing dialogue, and preserving Sudan's unity and national institutions.
He stressed that the League considers any attempts to undermine Sudan's sovereignty or fragment the country a non-starter, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the unrestricted flow of life-saving humanitarian aid to all those in need.
Fahmy further underlined the importance of protecting civilians, and supporting a comprehensive political process that ultimately restores security and stability while meeting the aspirations of the Sudanese people. (QNA)
