Abelardo de la Espriella Wins Colombian Presidential Election
Bogota, June 22 (QNA) - Abelardo de la Esperilla, the candidate of the right-wing conservative movement, won the second round of the Colombian presidential election after 99.7 percent of the votes were counted.
The Colombian National Electoral Council stated that de la Esperilla received 49.65 percent of the vote. His opponent, Ivan Cepeda, the candidate of the ruling left-wing Historical Pact coalition, received 48.7 percent.
Presidential elections in Colombia are held in two rounds if no candidate secures an absolute majority in the first round. The second round took place amidst sharp political polarization between the ruling left-wing coalition and conservative and right-wing forces.
Abelardo de la Esperilla represents the right-wing conservative movement "Defenders of the Homeland," while Ivan Cepeda ran as the candidate of the ruling left-wing "Historical Pact" coalition, which leads the current government.
The election campaigns focused on security, combating organized crime, the economy, inflation and investment, as well as issues of implementing peace agreements and dealing with armed groups and drug trafficking. (QNA)
