UN Expresses Concern over Escalating Violence in Sudan's Kordofan, Darfur
New York, June 01 (QNA) - The United Nations (UN) has expressed deep concern over the killing of dozens of civilians in Sudan in recent days, as fighting continues to escalate in parts of Kordofan and Darfur.
In this context, Spokesperson for the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric expressed the UN's strong condemnation of the killing of civilians.
Dujarric cited reports that said that clashes in the North Kordofan State's locality of Bara allegedly killed at least a dozen civilians, forced families to flee their homes, and heightened humanitarian needs.
In South Kordofan, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 2,200 people had been forced to leave in search of safety in recent days, according to reports.
As fighting continues across Sudan, UN agencies have also warned of a suspected cholera outbreak in Central Kordofan, where approximately 300 suspected cases and 77 deaths potentially linked to the disease have been recorded.
UN partners are responding to the situation, but shortages of supplies and resources are hindering these efforts.
Sudanese authorities had announced in March that the cholera outbreak across the country had been brought under control. However, UN agencies have warned that the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases is likely to increase during the rainy season, which begins this month.
On April 15, 2023, fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians and forcing millions to flee their homes due to the violence. (QNA)
