Vancouver, June 19 - Qatar lost 0-6 by Canada in their Group B second-round match at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Thursday, as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Jonathan David led Canada's scoring with a hat-trick, finding the net in the 29th, 45+3rd and 90+2nd minutes. Kyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, while Nathan Saliba added a fourth goal in the 64th minute. Qatar's Mohammed Manai also scored an own goal in the 75th minute.
The result moves Canada to four points at the top of Group B on goal difference ahead of Switzerland, which defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 earlier in the day. Qatar remain on one point, earned from their opening-match draw with Switzerland, and sit fourth in the group behind Bosnia and Herzegovina on goal difference.
Canada made a strong start and took the lead through Kyle Larin, who converted a rebound after an initial save by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada in the 16th minute.
Jonathan David doubled Canada's advantage in the 29th minute after capitalizing on a loose ball inside the penalty area, before adding his second goal in first-half stoppage time following another rebound from the goalkeeper.
Qatar's challenge became more difficult in the 34th minute when Homam Al Amin was sent off after a VAR review for denying Tajon Buchanan a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The second half saw Qatar reduced to nine players when Assim Madibo received a red card in the 51st minute following a challenge on Ismael Kone.
With the numerical advantage, Canada continued to create chances and extended their lead through substitute Nathan Saliba, whose direct free-kick found the net in the 64th minute.
Canada added a fifth goal in the 75th minute when Mohammed Manai inadvertently turned Jacob Shaffelburg's effort into his own net, before Jonathan David completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to seal the victory.
The win was Canada's first in the history of its FIFA World Cup appearances. (QNA)
