Mexico City, June 11 (QNA) - The 2026 FIFA World Cup opened on Thursday at Mexico City's iconic Azteca Stadium in a vibrant ceremony attended by around 80,000 spectators.
The 20-minute opening show featured large-scale folkloric performances showcasing Mexico's history and Aztec heritage, a central element of the host nation's cultural identity.
The ceremony also included performances by international music stars, including Colombian singer Shakira alongside Nigerian artist Burna Boy.
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli also took part, performing the official World Cup anthem titled "DNA", which blended opera with electronic music.
A parade of flags representing the 48 participating nations was also held, including Qatar, which is competing in its second consecutive World Cup following its debut as host nation in 2022.
As the ceremony drew to a close, preparations began on the pitch for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, marking the start of the group stage.
The tournament is the largest in World Cup history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches over 40 days. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed sides, will advance to the round of 32.
The final is scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States. (QNA)
