Armed Attack on Merchant Vessel Off Yemen Repelled by Security Team, UKMTO Says
London, June 10 (QNA) - A merchant vessel came under armed attack in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen's coast on Wednesday, but the ship's security team repelled the assailants and forced them to withdraw, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency.
The agency said it received a report from a commercial vessel that a small boat carrying six armed men approached the ship about 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, Yemen.
An exchange of gunfire followed between the attackers and the vessel's armed security personnel before the boat left the area. No injuries or damage were reported, and authorities are investigating the incident, UKMTO said.
The British military separately confirmed that gunfire was exchanged between the vessel's security guards and the armed men aboard the small craft in the Gulf of Aden.
UKMTO renewed its call for ships transiting the Bab Al Mandab Strait and Gulf of Aden to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious activity that could threaten maritime safety.
The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have faced recurring security disruptions since late 2023, with attacks on commercial and military vessels affecting global shipping routes and prompting many operators to reroute traffic or strengthen onboard security measures.
The Bab Al Mandab Strait, which links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, is one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global trade and energy shipments. (QNA)
